Inframous Valve Hacker Arrested
Tuesday 01 July 2008
Think way back to April 2007, when the big news of the month was how Valve had been hacked by a user called "MaddoxX." The hacker was able to break into a third-party website that handled all of Valve's Cyber Cafe information (client information, financial records, keys, etc.), causing quite a big stir among Valve users who feared their information may have been compromised. While no personal information was ever released, the hack did give MaddoxX the ability to create unlimited cyber cafe accounts and opened up the door to further abuse of Valve's finance system.

Fast forward to today, when it appears MaddoxX's luck has finally run out. Today, the hacker known as MaddoxX was arrested by The Team High Tech Crime (THTC), a cyber-crime Dutch police unit. He was caught in his home in Maastricht, Holland.

While MaddoxX is most known for his hack of the Valve system, he is also believed to be responsible for for hacking into and obtaining a developmental copy of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Activision), and perhaps most damaging, hacking into an English ticket holder website and stealing credit card information of 50,000 customers.

To learn more about the hacker and the story, head on over to the Google Translated page of a dutch newspaper story which described the events which led to his capture.

SourceMod 1.0 Released
Wednesday 19 March 2008
For those looking for an all-in-one administration tool for your Half-Life 2 game server, the development team for SourceMod has released its first official stable version. The mod boasts some great new features including lightning fast commands, an easy to use interface, and open-source code - meaning you can expect to see plenty of third-party plugins and improvements in the near future. While we haven't gotten a chance to test it out on our public servers, SourceMod appears to be a solid alternative for those looking for different programs to moderate their servers.
"SourceMod is a Half-Life 2 modification which focuses on server modification, server administration, and plugin writing. Plugins are scripted in the SourcePawn language, and they allow you to script actions on your server and access the Half-Life 2 (Source) engine with ease.

SourceMod is highly optimized and ideal for getting the most performance out of your Source servers, without the complexity of writing C++ code."

For more information on SourceMod or to download version 1.0.0, head on over to their Official Website.

CPL Officially Closes Its Doors
Friday 14 March 2008
The endless rumors proved true today, as the CPL has announced it will be closing its doors for the remainder of 2008 and possibly for good. Announced today on the CPL official website, all planned events and tournaments have been officially canceled with no plans on when operations will return.
"[However] The current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate have prompted the CPL to suspend its pro-tournament operations. The CPL regrets that this news will disappoint those that were planning on attending the summer and winter events this year."

Hailed as the founding father of Professional Esports, The CPL has managed to be a leader in Esports for nearly 11 years. Holding events on five continents with large cash prizes, The CPL quickly became a household name in all genres of competitive gaming.

It should be noted that all prize payout obligations from previous CPL events will be fulfilled. To get the complete statement and to read user reactions, head on over to The Official CPL Website.

FutureMark Attempts To Own \"PWNAGE\"
Wednesday 05 March 2008
In probably one of the oddest copyright cases we have seen in quite a while, Futuremark is attempting to trademark the commonly used phrase "PWNAGE". While it may sound like a bad joke, from a legal standpoint, it is far from a laughing matter. While gamers can rest assured that they will not be "charged" each time they use the phrase in the midst of battle, game server providers and corporate entities who use the phrase in business may not be so lucky. Futuremark Executive Producer Jukka Mäkinen explains.
"Our purpose in filing for trademark on the name "Pwnage" is not to charge money or stop people from using the expression. That's not what a trademark is for. Instead, we want to protect ourselves from squatters (or what I call campers) - people looking to trademark the name on false pretenses, just to make a claim against Futuremark Games Studio for its use."

While this is a serious matter, one thing I would really like to see is the judge's face as lawyers attempt to explain the meaning of "PWNAGE".

Monday 03 March 2008
The NERV is quickly becoming one of the largest Call Of Duty 4 LANS of all time, with 30 teams already pre-paid and ready to go. Held in Allentown Pennsylvania, a large turnout from teams and substantial entrance fees have led to quite a large prize pool.

CAL Claims The CPL Closing Its Doors, CPL Refutes
Wednesday 13 February 2008
Over the past day or so, the CPL and CAL have gotten themselves into a bit of a controversy. The ordeal all began in a post made on the CAL website and in email by Martijn “CAL|Martijn” Bloemheuvel, alleging that the CPL was dead due to the firings of Chris “CPL|ChrisM” Moncivalles and the imminent firing of Mike “CPL|Allen” Allen. However, soon after the information was released it was taken down off the website, and in an official statement, CAL refuted the allegations and made it clear that Allen, Moncivalles, and Hollingsworth are still employed by CPL.

The post that was removed seemed to be based solely on several rumors that have been floating around the community following a slew of failed events put on by The CPL.While there is no doubt the once great CPL has fallen on hard times, it still claims to be moving forward and the information was in fact false.
"While Chris Moncivalles is no longer CPL's Commissioner, both Mike Allen and Thomas Hollingsworth have not been terminated as the e-mail insinuates. Also Chris still has his CPL e-mail account, manages the CPL store and is the commissioner of CAL. Unfortunately, we cannot comment beyond this as this is a legal issue now and our legal counsel will pursue this matter to the full extent of the law."

When Bloemheuvel was asked as to why he posted the story, he blamed a lack of communication between CPL and CAL as the reason for the error. Interestingly, he continued to stand by his story, claiming he received information from CAL and CPL staff members and remained steadfast in that the story is accurate. Bloemheuvel stated:
"I posted it because we've known this generally for about two weeks, without any idea of what would be in our future. Angel basically stopped talking to everyone and just left us waiting in limbo. We just wanted to make CAL work. But with Angel refusing to communicate with everyone, we weren't given a fair chance. So, I decided to just take the fall for it, make it all public, and hopefully force Angel into an official statement so people could move on from there."

You can be sure you will here plenty more about this story in the near future.

Brazillian Government Bans Campus Party 08
Tuesday 05 February 2008
More fallout from the official banning of Counter-Strike in Brazil, as the justice department has released an order banning the game from this year's Campus Party 2008. As many of you know, last month the Brazilian government moved to ban sales of Counter-Strike inside the country, although it stated that LANs would be unaffected.

The Campus Party 2008 event is scheduled to take place from February 11th-17th at the Cecilio Matarazzo pavilion in the city of São Paulo, with the organization hoping that it will attract thousands of visitants during this week. There has been no official response from the tournament directors as to their reaction to the court order.

Now, all eyes will undoubtedly turn towards Brazilian national qualifiers, which currently has not found a national partner according to the ESWC website.

Portugal Team Disqualified From Nations Cup
Wednesday 23 January 2008
This year's Clan Base Nations Cup Counter-Strike tournament will be one nation short, Portugal. The team was disqualified from the event after one of its members used a "Silent Run" bug. Although Portugal managed to defeat the Czech Republic in the qualifier round with a score of 2-1, the Czech team manager protested the match and the victory for Portugal was reversed. Now the Czech team will move on to the next round, as Helder "coachi" Sancho, captain of Team Portugal argues his team did nothing wrong.
""I think it is unfair to lose a game that we won in the server and playing with 30 ping more than our opponent.

"The rule is ridiculous, and all the best players in the world do it, it does not make sense to forbid a skill like this, they are following what WCG 2007 did and we all know the kind of tournament it was.""

For more on Nations Cup and all of the standings, be sure to visit the Counter-Strike section of Clan Base.

Counter-Strike Banned In Brazil, LANS Excluded
Monday 21 January 2008
Counter-Strike, along with Everquest, will no longer be available in Brazil according to several news sources. The court order to cease sales in the country came from Carlos Alberto Simões de Tomaz, a judge from the Judicial District of Minas Gerais, who stated these titles have been considered "inappropriate" and "harmful for consumers". The state of Goiás is currently the only state in the country to begin enforcing the ban, confiscating thousands of copies of both video games in stores. Procon, a federal entity established to defend the consumers' rights, is leading the enforcement process and already has begun notifying game retailers that they are no longer permitted to distribute the games. However, people who already own the titles, and LANs will not be subject to the ban.
"Nevertheless, Lima stated that Procon has already notified Brazilian on-line stores with Counter-Strike and EverQuest titles available for purchase in order to have these products removed.

According to the Procon superintendent, as Justice has not prohibited the use of these games - only their distribution - LAN centers in Brazil are not forced to delete these titles from the computers.

"We are notifing all LAN centers of a Judicial decision. To play or not to play depends on a moral criteria from every person and every family, since the games are prohibited for minor," Lima told told UOL.com.br."
EA, the official distributor of the game, has stated it has received no legal judgment on the issue and is awaiting one before issuing a statement. We will keep you posted as more on the issue becomes available.

Welcome To The New Clan Database
Monday 21 January 2008
We have completely revamped our goals here at The Clan Database, and now we are proud that you are a part of it. In our quest to create a site that suits gaming team's needs, we have found that we needed to alter what our site offers and the services your team needs. While much of the site will function the same as it has previously, there are some exciting new changes and features we think you are really going to like.

The first and most obvious change will be the content we feature. No longer will we be supplying gaming news and reviews, after all, that is what our network websites are for. Now, instead, we will be giving you the latest in esports news that affects your team personally. You can expect to find features and interviews that tackle the latest issues in online gaming, as well as news that keeps you updated on the latest tournaments and LAN events, even some professional gaming news. All in the attempt to make the news and content we offer more relevant to the online gamer.

We have also removed all player profiles from The Clan Database. Now, you MPN account will function as your only account for our entire network. Hopefully this will remove some confusion that many of our members have complained about. Also, we have altered our gaming news headlines. UT3 Technology To Thank For New Cowboy Stadium
Wednesday 02 January 2008
Well the Dallas Cowboys have a lot of people to thank for their new stadium, but here's one you might not expect. Business Week has posted an article which discusses how game technology has worked to further many other industries, architecture being one in particular. The firm in charge of the stadiums development, HKS, has used the Unreal Engine to develop several other projects as well and has saved the company thousands of dollars.
"Unreal Engine allows developers to cut down the time it takes to create complex graphics and game play. Over the past decade the technology has been used in the production of best sellers such as Gears of War and Mass Effect, churning out increasingly sophisticated polygonal images of all types, from futuristic space stations to hyper-realistic blood and guts. Applied to architectural models, it is helping HKS generate additional revenues of $65,000 to $150,000 per project."

The CVG Guide How To PWN At Team Fortress 2
Thursday 27 December 2007
CVG has released a new Team Fortress 2 guide, properly titled "How To PWN At Team Fortress 2". They list 12 key tips and tricks that will hopefully help your game. The list includes tips such as how binding will make you more efficient and how to properly manage your server. To check out the full guide head on over to the CVG Website.
"Winners don't do losing
Remember, a good loser is patient, grateful and quick to congratulate their opponent. But enough of that crazy talk. If all else fails, use good, old-fashioned psychology to yank success from the jaws of defeat. It's usually obvious if you're on a team of losers, giving you plenty of time to jump ship to the winning side. If auto-balance isn't your friend, it's time for more... direct methods. Even as Scary Voice booms your failure, gloat and cheer about your victory on the chat. If you're convincing enough, maybe the other team won't notice."

The sale will continue through January 1st, and remember that Steam is also giving customers the ability to give steam products away, which may come in handy for that friend you forgot to buy a Christmas present for. For more information, or to pick up the latest games on sale, head on over to the Steam Powered Website.
