 Inframous Valve Hacker Arrested
Tuesday 01 July 2008
Think way back to April 2007, when the big news of the month was how Valve had been hacked by a user called "MaddoxX." The hacker was able to break into a third-party website that handled all of Valve's Cyber Cafe information (client information, financial records, keys, etc.), causing quite a big stir among Valve users who feared their information may have been compromised. While no personal information was ever released, the hack did give MaddoxX the ability to create unlimited cyber cafe accounts and opened up the door to further abuse of Valve's finance system. Fast forward to today, when it appears MaddoxX's luck has finally run out. Today, the hacker known as MaddoxX was arrested by The Team High Tech Crime (THTC), a cyber-crime Dutch police unit. He was caught in his home in Maastricht, Holland. While MaddoxX is most known for his hack of the Valve system, he is also believed to be responsible for for hacking into and obtaining a developmental copy of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Activision), and perhaps most damaging, hacking into an English ticket holder website and stealing credit card information of 50,000 customers. To learn more about the hacker and the story, head on over to the Google Translated page of a dutch newspaper story which described the events which led to his capture. Source: Planet Half-Life

 FutureMark Attempts To Own \"PWNAGE\"
Wednesday 05 March 2008
In probably one of the oddest copyright cases we have seen in quite a while, Futuremark is attempting to trademark the commonly used phrase "PWNAGE". While it may sound like a bad joke, from a legal standpoint, it is far from a laughing matter. While gamers can rest assured that they will not be "charged" each time they use the phrase in the midst of battle, game server providers and corporate entities who use the phrase in business may not be so lucky. Futuremark Executive Producer Jukka Mäkinen explains.
While this is a serious matter, one thing I would really like to see is the judge's face as lawyers attempt to explain the meaning of "PWNAGE".

CAL Claims The CPL Closing Its Doors, CPL Refutes
Wednesday 13 February 2008
Over the past day or so, the CPL and CAL have gotten themselves into a bit of a controversy. The ordeal all began in a post made on the CAL website and in email by Martijn “CAL|Martijn” Bloemheuvel, alleging that the CPL was dead due to the firings of Chris “CPL|ChrisM” Moncivalles and the imminent firing of Mike “CPL|Allen” Allen. However, soon after the information was released it was taken down off the website, and in an official statement, CAL refuted the allegations and made it clear that Allen, Moncivalles, and Hollingsworth are still employed by CPL.
The post that was removed seemed to be based solely on several rumors that have been floating around the community following a slew of failed events put on by The CPL.While there is no doubt the once great CPL has fallen on hard times, it still claims to be moving forward and the information was in fact false.
When Bloemheuvel was asked as to why he posted the story, he blamed a lack of communication between CPL and CAL as the reason for the error. Interestingly, he continued to stand by his story, claiming he received information from CAL and CPL staff members and remained steadfast in that the story is accurate. Bloemheuvel stated:
You can be sure you will here plenty more about this story in the near future.
Brazillian Government Bans Campus Party 08
Tuesday 05 February 2008
More fallout from the official banning of Counter-Strike in Brazil, as the justice department has released an order banning the game from this year's Campus Party 2008. As many of you know, last month the Brazilian government moved to ban sales of Counter-Strike inside the country, although it stated that LANs would be unaffected.
The Campus Party 2008 event is scheduled to take place from February 11th-17th at the Cecilio Matarazzo pavilion in the city of São Paulo, with the organization hoping that it will attract thousands of visitants during this week. There has been no official response from the tournament directors as to their reaction to the court order.
Now, all eyes will undoubtedly turn towards Brazilian national qualifiers, which currently has not found a national partner according to the ESWC website.

Counter-Strike Banned In Brazil, LANS Excluded
Monday 21 January 2008
Counter-Strike, along with Everquest, will no longer be available in Brazil according to several news sources. The court order to cease sales in the country came from Carlos Alberto Simões de Tomaz, a judge from the Judicial District of Minas Gerais, who stated these titles have been considered "inappropriate" and "harmful for consumers". The state of Goiás is currently the only state in the country to begin enforcing the ban, confiscating thousands of copies of both video games in stores. Procon, a federal entity established to defend the consumers' rights, is leading the enforcement process and already has begun notifying game retailers that they are no longer permitted to distribute the games. However, people who already own the titles, and LANs will not be subject to the ban. EA, the official distributor of the game, has stated it has received no legal judgment on the issue and is awaiting one before issuing a statement. We will keep you posted as more on the issue becomes available.
Welcome To The New Clan Database
Monday 21 January 2008
We have completely revamped our goals here at The Clan Database, and now we are proud that you are a part of it. In our quest to create a site that suits gaming team's needs, we have found that we needed to alter what our site offers and the services your team needs. While much of the site will function the same as it has previously, there are some exciting new changes and features we think you are really going to like.
The first and most obvious change will be the content we feature. No longer will we be supplying gaming news and reviews, after all, that is what our network websites are for. Now, instead, we will be giving you the latest in esports news that affects your team personally. You can expect to find features and interviews that tackle the latest issues in online gaming, as well as news that keeps you updated on the latest tournaments and LAN events, even some professional gaming news. All in the attempt to make the news and content we offer more relevant to the online gamer.
We have also removed all player profiles from The Clan Database. Now, you MPN account will function as your only account for our entire network. Hopefully this will remove some confusion that many of our members have complained about. Also, we have altered our gaming news headlines. Now, our game pages will feature only the latest clan news headlines to keep you updated on what the teams in our community are up to.
And finally, expect to see much more content and services that your team can use. New web templates, game servers, and account features are all on the way for you and your team. However, as we continue to evolve, your input is extremely important to us. Let us know what you think, and help us make The Clan Database into the ultimate gaming team website.
