Which Is Better, The Desktop Or The Laptop?
Monday 11 August 2008
Players are always trying to gain every advantage possible when it comes to competitive gaming. For the most part, the player with the best hardware usually ends up with the advantage, however which hardware is considered to be better is always open for debate. Yet, when players are asked which PC platform is best for gaming, the laptop or the desktop, it is almost unanimously agreed upon that the desktop is better. However, this assumption may not necessarily be true according to Ars Technica writer Don Reisenger. In his article, he explains why in his opinion the desktop's domination of gaming may be coming to an end without anyone knowing it.
"One of the biggest issues facing notebooks in the past was their lack of power. For years, we were forced to use notebooks that weren't nearly as capable as their desktop counterparts. Unless we wanted to simply surf the Web, check e-mail, and write up some documents, all the resource-intensive work was saved for the desktop.

But in recent years, notebooks have matched most desktops, and it's becoming much easier to find a desktop replacement from every major vendor that easily outpaces all but the more advanced towers. Just three years ago, the concept of a desktop replacement was a pipe dream. Back then, the super-hot components running desktops were incapable of running in notebooks, while the industry was failing to address battery issues that plagued them and made them less-than ideal desktop replacements. Beware Of Steam Scam
Monday 04 August 2008
A new scam targeting Steam users is making its way around the internet today. The scam, which comes in the form of an email, phishes for a user's account information by promising "CounterStrike : Pro" in exchange for your account details. The scam was revealed by CVG, who actually received one of the false emails themselves.
"A phishing email scam is circulating the internet, asking Steam users to enter their account details in order to receive a free version of CounterStrike: Pro. We've had at least ten between us this morning.

We received the dodgy message this morning, which told us to follow these steps in order to claim our copy of the game:

* Visit the Steam homepage http://www.steampowered.com/.
* Log yourself in by using your Steam Username and Password.
(If you are in a public place, make sure you are the only one that sees your account information)
* After logging in you wil get an activation code, copy the code and move on to the next step.
* You will now have to choose between ATI & nVIDIA.
* After clicking on the ATI or nVIDIA logo, you will be asked for the activation code (So make sure you have copied the code)
* After following all this steps, your game is now activated on your Steam account.
You can now go to the 'Games' tab on Steam and download your free version of CounterStrike : Pro."

Inframous Valve Hacker Arrested
Tuesday 01 July 2008
Think way back to April 2007, when the big news of the month was how Valve had been hacked by a user called "MaddoxX." The hacker was able to break into a third-party website that handled all of Valve's Cyber Cafe information (client information, financial records, keys, etc.), causing quite a big stir among Valve users who feared their information may have been compromised. While no personal information was ever released, the hack did give MaddoxX the ability to create unlimited cyber cafe accounts and opened up the door to further abuse of Valve's finance system.

Fast forward to today, when it appears MaddoxX's luck has finally run out. Today, the hacker known as MaddoxX was arrested by The Team High Tech Crime (THTC), a cyber-crime Dutch police unit. He was caught in his home in Maastricht, Holland.

While MaddoxX is most known for his hack of the Valve system, he is also believed to be responsible for for hacking into and obtaining a developmental copy of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Activision), and perhaps most damaging, hacking into an English ticket holder website and stealing credit card information of 50,000 customers.

To learn more about the hacker and the story, head on over to the Google Translated page of a dutch newspaper story which described the events which led to his capture.

Scientists Find New Memory That Prevents Bootups
Wednesday 30 April 2008
When I read through this article it just blew my mind that someone was even researching this in the 70's. It is really truly awesome. Anyway before I give more away from the article, here it is from Reuters.com.
"It took about 40 years to find it, but scientists at Hewlett-Packard said on Wednesday they discovered a fourth basic type of electrical circuit that could lead to a computer you never have to boot up.

The finding proves what until now had only been theory -- but could save millions from the tedium of waiting for a computer to find its "place," the researchers said.

Basic electronics theory teaches that there are three fundamental elements of a passive circuit -- resistors, capacitors and inductors when the power is turned off, and must be accessed from the hard drive when the computer goes back on.

But a computer that incorporates this new kind of memory circuit would never lose it place, even when the power is turned off.

"If you turn on your computer it will come up instantly where it was when you turned it off. That is a very interesting potential application, and one that is very realistic," Williams said.

But he said understanding this new circuit element could be critical as companies attempt to build ever smaller devices.

"It's essential that people understand this to be able to go further into the world of nanoelectronics," referring to electronics on the nano scale -- objects tens of thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair.

"It turns out that memristance, this property, gets more important as the device gets smaller. That is another major reason it took so long to find," Williams said."

SourceMod 1.0 Released
Wednesday 19 March 2008
For those looking for an all-in-one administration tool for your Half-Life 2 game server, the development team for SourceMod has released its first official stable version. The mod boasts some great new features including lightning fast commands, an easy to use interface, and open-source code - meaning you can expect to see plenty of third-party plugins and improvements in the near future. While we haven't gotten a chance to test it out on our public servers, SourceMod appears to be a solid alternative for those looking for different programs to moderate their servers.
"SourceMod is a Half-Life 2 modification which focuses on server modification, server administration, and plugin writing. Plugins are scripted in the SourcePawn language, and they allow you to script actions on your server and access the Half-Life 2 (Source) engine with ease.

SourceMod is highly optimized and ideal for getting the most performance out of your Source servers, without the complexity of writing C++ code."

CPL Officially Closes Its Doors
Friday 14 March 2008
The endless rumors proved true today, as the CPL has announced it will be closing its doors for the remainder of 2008 and possibly for good. Announced today on the CPL official website, all planned events and tournaments have been officially canceled with no plans on when operations will return.
"[However] The current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate have prompted the CPL to suspend its pro-tournament operations. The CPL regrets that this news will disappoint those that were planning on attending the summer and winter events this year."

Hailed as the founding father of Professional Esports, The CPL has managed to be a leader in Esports for nearly 11 years. Holding events on five continents with large cash prizes, The CPL quickly became a household name in all genres of competitive gaming.

It should be noted that all prize payout obligations from previous CPL events will be fulfilled. To get the complete statement and to read user reactions, head on over to The Official CPL Website.

FutureMark Attempts To Own "PWNAGE"
Wednesday 05 March 2008
In probably one of the oddest copyright cases we have seen in quite a while, Futuremark is attempting to trademark the commonly used phrase "PWNAGE". While it may sound like a bad joke, from a legal standpoint, it is far from a laughing matter. While gamers can rest assured that they will not be "charged" each time they use the phrase in the midst of battle, game server providers and corporate entities who use the phrase in business may not be so lucky. Futuremark Executive Producer Jukka Mäkinen explains.
"Our purpose in filing for trademark on the name "Pwnage" is not to charge money or stop people from using the expression. That's not what a trademark is for. Instead, we want to protect ourselves from squatters (or what I call campers) - people looking to trademark the name on false pretenses, just to make a claim against Futuremark Games Studio for its use."

While this is a serious matter, one thing I would really like to see is the judge's face as lawyers attempt to explain the meaning of "PWNAGE".
